BIO

Hey guys Emily here, so just a little bit of background knowledge: I am twenty-one years old, I was originally born in South Africa or Cape Town to be exact, then my parents decided that since my family was getting bigger with the four of us kids, they decided to migrate to this little old green island in the middle of nowhere called New Zealand. Now since that was at an early age of five, growing up in New Zealand feels pretty much like home for me and my family.

My First Blog Post

“Nothing is impossible, Even the word itself says “im possible”- Audrey Hepburn

This is the first post on my new blog. I’m going to be talking about my university life but more specifically on a Performance paper, I’m completing. Some background information about me is that I never really did anything in high school or any tertiary studies to do with Drama or Performing, my whole life iv just been very extroverted and comfortable around people and I guess certain situations in life has formed me to be as I would say a confident person. My constant arguments/debates or conversations has helped me to develop good speaking skills with people I come in contact with. A goals I wish to achieve in this class is to get A or a B for my individual performance and meet all of the assessment briefs in order to achieve this, this is because I feel like since I am already a confident person I want to push my self to have a great performing character or something engaging that shows my true authentic self.

Perfromance Evaluation/Perfromance band/Miss June

I first saw The New Zealand Band Miss June perfomce this year at The Wellington gig venue “San Fran”. They were doing a tour for their new album ‘Bad Lucky Party’ , the album is about somone finding their place in a world as distorted and ambivalent as the forces that control it.

Miss June are a four-piece from Auckland who are purveyors of the noisy-punk movement. Their debut EP found frontwoman Annabel Liddell (my all time favourite performer) being placed as the voice for a generation of young females, through her feminist, she to me is such a power woman when watchign her, so fierce and loud!

Miss June can be seen as has influence from bands like Sonic Youth, Hole, Bikini Kill and Le Tigre. My favourte song form their albums are ‘Clyde’ and ‘Please Waste My Time’

If ‘Bad Luck Party’ can be split into two things, then it is the all-too-human experiences of rage that stems from the frustration of being a person who find themselves disadvantaged based on circumstances out of their control; and the softness that comes from encountering warmth from another person, no matter how short it may last. ‘Anomaly’ comes across as a supernova that explores the lust of a fleeting encounter which is intense at first, but dies out quite quickly. The fun of this, is that the song actually transpires in the reverse. Miss June have released a debut that is personal, relatable, and filled with bangers no matter what mood you may be in.

Overall, Miss June is an amazing band and i cant wait for them to blow up Internationally!

Performance Evaluation/ Ellen DeGeneres’s/Tv-Presenter.

I saw the Ellen DeGeneres’s talk show when I was 16 at the Warner brothers studios in California, The place was full of crazry fans screaming their lungs out every time she says something, or makes a joke, or simply stares. All the fans (who are often invited to the stage during the show) come running from their seats, scream for about a minute, then catch their breath and have a “Oh my God, I can’t believe! It’s Ellen!” shouting period, then go on about how Ellen is great, because she’s amazing. Ellen often hand out free gifts to her auidance. Usually you have to book a seat in over a year in advance!

The first thing you notice on this show is how limited the vocabulary is. Words like magnificent, wonderful, splendid, brilliant, gorgeous, stunning, excellent, charming, delightful etc. do not exist in the Ellen universe. All the guests, and all their work, whether it’s movies or music or shows, are described as either “amazing” or “so good.

It’s kinda sad because in the rare instances where she breaks out of script and speaks as herself, Ellen can actually be funny. But the show is written exclusively to emphasize the “amazing because she’s great, great because she’s amazing” persona that she has built over the years, and that really brings the whole show down to an everlasting mediocrity. She always stays in character and presents in a confident manner.

Overall, I fairy enjoy going to California when i was a kid but also watching the Ellen show was defintly a postive part of the trip. i always would watch her show on the weekends early in the morning, I find comfort in the way she makes all her guests feel comfortable and safe at her shows. It was a great experiance.

Performace Comparison/Gary Henderson and Jenifer Ward-Guest Lectures

In the first week of out performace comms we had a guest speaker called Gary Henderson. Gary was a very interesting presenter, he was clear and informative about his background withen peroforming. He gave us a excersize to complete, we had to write down a word that came to our mind for every letter of the alphabet then he asked us to narrow it down to five then wrtie a headline for each one. I found this practice fun and engaging. Another guest speaker was Jenifer ward whom is the prisident of The Actors Equity here in New Zealand. I found her lecture a bit more intresting compared to Gary’s as I personally feel like her background was more realatble for young actors in New Zealand, she had started from a very young age in plays and always had support from her family and friends. A quote I quite enjoyed was: Versitility is key to have a caraer as an actor in NZ”, and that ” you must have thick skin”. Jenifer Ward was very well known and were involved in many aspects in her carer but on the other hand Gary was not.

Overall, i throughly enjoyed both actors lectures a dn belive that eveyones cararer journey deserves to be heard wither they are succesful or not.
